The story behind the Piggie Parcel Pellets...
Long term guinea pig owner and founder of Piggie Parcels, Amanda, wanted to develop a guinea pig pellet that allowed to feed a lower volume of pellets per day, thus leaving room for the guinea pig to eat the maximum amount of hay.
Most manufacturers of pellets recommend a feed rate of 30-50g per day and yet guinea pig experts advise to only feed 15g per day.
So that got Amanda thinking, if the manufacturers recommend 50g and we are only feeding 15g then is the guinea pig receiving the correct levels of recommended vitamins?
She set out to develop a pellet that would be rich in natural ingredients rather than synthetic substitutes, contain no cheap fillers, would be concentrated so that a lower feed rate would provide the correct vitamins and minerals AND there was to be no compromise on the pellet due to cost. In fact she refused to look at the cost until after the recipe had been finalised!
After two years of research and working with qualified animal feed nutritionists we came up with the Piggie Parcels concentrated pellet. A pellet with a reduced daily feeding rate but with all the vitamins and minerals needed.
We worked with an animal feed manufacturing specialist company in the UK with same values with regards to holistic approach to animal feeds and a 50 year history of animal feed manufacturer.
About the Pellet
This is a Meadow Grass-based concentrated pellet that allows for a smaller amount to be fed, encouraging guinea pigs to eat a maximum amount of hay. Just 20g (just over 1 tablespoon) is needed per day for a 1000g guinea pig. Developed in the UK with expert nutritionists and manufactured in a UK mill, we selected only the best ingredients, each one chosen for providing a specific nutritional benefit. Our pellets are supplemented with vitamins, minerals and stabilised Vitamin C. These pellets have a correctly balanced calcium:phosphorus ratio and added Pro and Pre biotics for digestive health. Hemp and Linseed are included as natural sources of Omega 3+6 for a healthy skin and coat and the Hemp also supports hindgut digestion.

Cost effective feeding
By feeding a lower rate per day our feed works out more cost effective. As you can see from the table below, the cost per day of feeding our pellet is just 14p per day per pig compared to other leading brands where the cost is .20p. Also as you are feeding less, one bag will last more days!

PELLET FAQ
How should I store my pellets?
Keep them in the bag they came in which can be resealed.
Store in a dark and cool location. Do not empty the pellets out into a transparent
storage jar (glass or plastic) as sunlight could decrease the effectiveness of
the added Vitamin C.
What is the shelf life of the pellets?
We recommend a shelf life of 6 months on our pellets. We make our pellets in small batches to ensure the pellets are as
fresh as possible when they are delivered to you.
How many pellets should I feed per day?
We recommend feeding 20g per day based on a 1000g piggie, if your piggie weights a little or less more you can adjust up or down. Don’t forget the pellets are a complementary feed,
hay is the most important part of a piggies diet, so never overfeed pellets, no
matter how much your piggies squeak!
How long will one bag of pellets last two piggies?
Based on two 1000g piggies and a feeding rate of 20g per day, one bag will last 25 days at a cost of 0.14p per day per pig.
Do I need to feed pellets?
Some guinea pig owners like the peace of mind of feeding pellets alongside hay, greens and forage to ensure thier piggies are receiving the correct levels of vitamins and minerals each day.
BUT pellets are only a complementery part of the diet and some people choose to feed their guinea pigs hay, forage (fresh and dried) and fresh vegtables, this is fine too!
